Let’s focus on the raw stage energy of the Japanese hard rock band 5X, fronted by the legendary Carmen Maki. This is their 1982 live album, “Live-X,” released on the Eastworld label (Toshiba EMI) with the catalog number WTP-80151. This particular copy includes the original obi strip.
Issued on July 1, 1982, this 9-track LP captures the band’s powerful performance at a packed Kudan Kaikan in Tokyo during their national tour. 5X stood out in the early J-Metal scene; fronted by established veterans Carmen Maki (vocals) and George Azuma (guitar/producer), their sound was often seen as less flashy and more solid, delivering riff-based rock with a unique, mature flavor.
This live album is a testament to the band’s power, particularly the incredible vocals of Carmen Maki. Fans note her performance here is immensely powerful and stable, possessing a raw, guttural edge, with her cover of “Come On Everybody” drawing comparisons to Steve Marriott. While often associated with her earlier work with OZ, this album documents Maki’s formidable talent within a heavy metal context.
The album features tracks from their debut “Human Target” (like “悪い夢” – Warui Yume) as well as material from Maki’s previous bands, such as “Motorcycle City.” “Live-X” (WTP-80151) remains a crucial document of this powerful collaboration, capturing the band’s live prowess and Maki’s exceptional voice. The release came complete with an obi and an insert sheet featuring liner notes by Masa Ito.
