Continuing our exploration of pioneering Japanese hard rock band Bow Wow, let’s focus on their second studio album, “Signal Fire.” Released on the Invitation label (Victor) with the catalog number VIH-6005, this 12-inch vinyl LP arrived on July 25, 1977. This particular copy includes the original obi strip.

This sophomore effort is widely regarded as an early masterpiece and a pinnacle of Japanese hard rock, surpassing even their strong debut in terms of song quality. Produced by Yoshimi Ueno, the album received high praise from industry figures like Yoichi Shibuya. It’s packed with high-quality tracks, including the title track, “Silver Lightning,” and “Still.”

“Signal Fire” is celebrated for its incredible songwriting and, notably, its sophisticated, gimmick-filled hard rock arrangements, which many fans felt signaled a “new era” of hard rock. Tracks like “Get On Our Train” (天国行超特急) and “Rock ‘n’ Roll Drive” became monster live anthems that remain fan favorites to this day.

VIH-6005 captures Bow Wow firing on all cylinders, showcasing their powerful, guitar-driven sound and exceptional musical craftsmanship. Often hailed as the band’s finest work, “Signal Fire” is an essential, landmark album in the history of Japanese hard rock. The release came with an obi and an insert, with initial pressings also including a poster.
