Let’s examine the fifth studio album from Japanese hard rock mainstays Earthshaker, “Overrun.” Released on July 15, 1986, via the Nexus label (King Records), this 12-inch vinyl LP (catalog number K28P-635) marks a significant point in the band’s evolution. This specific copy retains its original obisticker on the shrinkwrap.

“Overrun” was the band’s final album for the Nexus label and is often seen as a transitional and challenging work. Produced and arranged by the band, this album saw them boldly incorporating synthesizers and guest keyboards (played by Yoshikazu Matsuura) much more prominently than on previous efforts.

This move expanded their sound, adding a “sparkling” texture, but also signaled a shift away from their raw metal edge toward a poppier, more melodic direction, with arrangements often built to highlight the vocals. This change, which some compare to the American-influenced sounds hinted at on their previous album “Passion,” was met with mixed feelings by some early fans, though others praise it as a daring and successful experiment.

The album is packed with high-quality songs, showcasing the band’s consistent melodic strength. It includes standout tracks like the anthemic “Don’t Need To Surrender,” the driving “Gambler,” the popular “Ima Kimi Ni Mata Aete” (a poignant love song), and the aggressive rock number “I’m Like A Gypsy You’re Like A Gypsy.”

“Overrun” (K28P-635) captures Earthshaker at a pivotal moment, embracing new sounds and achieving a fine balance between hard rock energy and catchy accessibility. Many consider it a culmination of their early period and a highly underrated masterpiece. The release came with a fold-open insert and sometimes other extras like postcards or photos.
