The Final Shout: Reaction’s ‘Twist And Shout’ (VIH-28352)

Let’s explore the final studio album from the Japanese heavy metal band Reaction, titled “Twist And Shout.” Released in 1988 on the Invitation label (Victor), this 12-inch vinyl LP carries the catalog number VIH-28352.

Arriving just ten months after their previous self-titled album, “Twist And Shout” marked the culmination of the band’s musical evolution and, ultimately, the end of their original run. This album saw Reaction move further away from the raw, aggressive metal of their early days, expanding on the more straightforward rock ‘n’ roll direction introduced on the preceding album. This stylistic shift, which also involved significant lyrical contributions from outside writer K.INOJO, was met with mixed feelings by some longtime fans who missed their earlier, edgier sound.

However, “Twist And Shout” stands on its own as a collection of catchy, well-arranged rock songs. It showcases refined melodies and a different kind of energy across tracks like the driving title song, “Red Zone,” “Star Collector,” and “Right To Rock,” balanced by warmer, more melodic pieces like “Always On My Mind” and the aptly titled “Last Song.”

The album is historically significant as it was the last to feature vocalist Junya “Jun” Kato, who departed after its release, leading to the band’s dissolution. This context lends a particular poignancy to the album, especially its closer, “Last Song,” which unintentionally became the band’s final recorded message. VIH-28352 captures Reaction’s final chapter, exploring a more refined rock ‘n’ roll sound.
