A Stylistic Detour: Bow Wow’s ‘Glorious Road’ (SM25-5040)

Let’s explore one of the most debated and unique albums in the discography of Japanese hard rock pioneers Bow Wow: their fifth studio album, “Glorious Road.” Released on February 25, 1980, this 12-inch vinyl LP was issued on SMS Records with the catalog number SM25-5040. This particular copy includes the original obi strip.

Arriving after the 1978 album “Guarantee,” which had already signaled a shift towards a more mainstream sound, “Glorious Road” pushed this pop-oriented “Kayōkyoku rock” (Japanese pop-rock) style even further. This move was controversial among fans of their earlier, heavier hard rock output. The album features 12 tracks, all with Japanese lyrics (many penned by outside writers), and a greater emphasis on pop song structures, often featuring prominent falsetto backing vocals.

Despite the poppier direction, the album is noted for a fascinating sonic contrast: Kyoji Yamamoto’s guitar playing reportedly remains raw and hard-edged, cutting through the polished arrangements. This release is also seen as a pivotal moment for the band’s other guitarist/vocalist, Mitsuhiro Saito, who takes a more prominent vocal role, marking an “awakening” that would inform his future solo career.

Even the jacket artwork, reflecting the “techno boom” of the era, signaled a departure from typical hard rock aesthetics. While “Glorious Road” was initially met with confusion, it is now viewed as an important, albeit unusual, chapter in Bow Wow’s history, showcasing their versatility and documenting a key transitional phase.
