Swift Strike: Sniper’s Sophomore Album ‘Quick & Dead’ (ELL-016)

Let’s revisit the energetic sounds of Japanese heavy metal band Sniper, focusing on their second full-length album, “Quick & Dead.” Released in June 1985 on the independent ELL Record label (associated with Nagoya’s Electric Lady Land live house), this 12-inch vinyl LP carries the catalog number ELL-016. This specific copy retains its original outer shrinkwrap with the obisticker.

Hailing from Nagoya and forming in 1981, Sniper established themselves in the underground scene before releasing their debut live album, “Open The Attack,” in 1984. “Quick & Dead” marked their first full studio effort, further solidifying their place within the vibrant J-Metal scene of the mid-80s.

Released on the indie ELL Record label, this album captures the band’s raw energy and commitment to straightforward heavy metal across its 9 tracks, including standouts like “Let It Shine On Me,” “Speed Of Light,” and the title track. Listeners can expect driving guitar riffs (courtesy of Masanori “Burny” Kusakabe, later of Asian Black and Gracias), a powerful rhythm section, and commanding vocals, characteristic of classic 80s Japanese metal with a distinctly “Japanese” vocal feel. The production retains an independent, raw edge. Reportedly, this album even saw a release in Europe, indicating some early international recognition.

Unfortunately, following this release, the band experienced significant lineup changes, marking the end of this particular era. ELL-016 remains a significant release for fans tracing the discography of Sniper and the broader history of the Japanese independent metal scene. It captures the band’s powerful sound during the genre’s golden era, showcasing their catchy yet hard-hitting style.
