Casting Shadows: Loudness’ Japanese ‘Shadows of War’ (P-13264)

Let’s turn our attention back to Japanese heavy metal giants Loudness, focusing on their sixth studio album, “Shadows of War.” This entry looks specifically at the original Japanese vinyl pressing released by Warner-Pioneer Corporation (under license from ATCO Records) with the catalog number P-13264.

Issued on March 24, 1986, this 12-inch LP holds a unique place in the band’s discography. While much of the music formed the basis of their internationally released album “Lightning Strikes” (also produced by Max Norman), “Shadows of War” (P-13264) is the distinct Japanese domestic version. It features the powerful vocals of Minoru Niihara delivered entirely in Japanese and, crucially, includes the title track “Shadows Of War” instead of “Ashes In The Sky,” which appeared on the international release. Recorded across late 1985 and early 1986 at Sedic and Take One Studios in Tokyo, and mastered by the legendary Bob Ludwig at Masterdisk, the album boasts world-class production.

This album captures the classic Loudness lineup during their period of peak international activity. The music is prime Loudness: technically brilliant, aggressive heavy metal infused with strong melodic hooks and unforgettable guitar riffs from Akira Takasaki, alongside driving rhythms from Masayoshi Yamashita and Munetaka Higuchi. Tracks like “Let It Go,” “One Thousand Eyes,” and the title track showcase their power in their native language.

For collectors and dedicated fans, the Japanese version “Shadows of War” (P-13264) is a crucial acquisition. It offers the chance to hear these iconic heavy metal anthems in their original Japanese language form, featuring a unique tracklist compared to its international counterpart, and representing the band’s direct connection with their home audience during their global rise.
