Venturing Abroad for Sonic Cinema: Kyoji Yamamoto’s ‘Electric Cinema’ (30046-28)
Let’s explore another solo venture from legendary Japanese guitarist Kyoji Yamamoto (Bow Wow/Vow Wow). This time, we focus on his 1982 album, “Electric Cinema,” released on the Vap label with the catalog number 30046-28. This copy includes the original obi strip.
Issued in October 1982, this 12-inch vinyl LP arrived during Yamamoto’s transition period between Bow Wow’s heavier direction and the formation of Vow Wow. Indicative of his growing international focus, Yamamoto recorded “Electric Cinema” entirely at Konk Studios in London, collaborating predominantly with British musicians.
Produced by Yamamoto himself, the album features a lineup including Bob Hawthorn on vocals, Bob Murray on guitar, John Sinfield on bass, Graham Waxman on drums, and renowned keyboardist Tommy Eyre handling keyboard arrangements. Yamamoto contributes guitar, fretless bass, sitar, vocals, and chorus parts, showcasing his versatility.
“Electric Cinema” delivers a collection of polished hard rock tracks, blending Yamamoto’s signature virtuosic and melodic guitar work with strong vocal performances and contributions from his London-based collaborators. Songs like “I’ll Wait A Lifetime,” “Could This Be Magic,” “Love Someone,” and “Just Can’t Take It” exemplify the album’s high-quality production and songwriting. The release came packaged with extras like a folded poster/lyric sheet and a booklet with blank tablature sheets.
30046-28 captures Kyoji Yamamoto operating in an international setting, crafting a sophisticated hard rock album with a different set of collaborators. It stands as a significant solo statement, showcasing his exceptional talent and musical vision during a key transitional phase in his career.
