A Groundbreaking Entrance: Mari Hamada’s ‘Lunatic Doll’ (VIH-28124)
Today we revisit the electrifying debut album that introduced Mari Hamada to the world: “Lunatic Doll” (暗殺警告 – Ansatsu Keikoku / Assassination Warning). This 12-inch vinyl LP was released in 1983 on the Invitation label (Victor) with the catalog number VIH-28124.
“Lunatic Doll” marked a pivotal moment for Japanese heavy metal, signaling the arrival of an exceptionally talented female vocalist in a genre predominantly led by men. The album immediately established Hamada as a force to be reckoned with, thanks to her impressive vocal range and powerful delivery.
Crucially, the album’s heavy metal foundation was solidified by the production and drumming contributions of Munetaka Higuchi, the legendary drummer of Loudness. His involvement ensured a high-caliber, powerful sound. The 10 tracks, including standouts like “Noah,” “Tokio Makin’ Love,” and “All Night Party,” deliver a potent blend of energetic heavy metal and hard rock, featuring strong guitar work and Higuchi’s signature drumming, all serving as the perfect launchpad for Hamada’s soaring vocals.
VIH-28124 is a cornerstone of 80s J-Metal. “Lunatic Doll” not only launched the long and successful career of Mari Hamada but also demonstrated the immense talent emerging within the Japanese scene. It remains an essential debut, capturing the raw power and melodic sensibilities that would define her early work.
