Paying Homage with Shred: Toshiya ‘Ran’ Matsukawa’s ‘Burning’ (WTP-90366)
Let’s spotlight the impressive debut solo album from influential Japanese guitarist Toshiya “Ran” Matsukawa, renowned for his work in X-Ray and Blizard. This is his 1985 release, “Burning,” presented on the Eastworld label (Toshiba EMI) with catalog number WTP-90366. This particular copy comes complete with its original obi strip.
Explicitly dedicated to the late Randy Rhoads, this 9-track, 12-inch vinyl LP serves as a powerful showcase for Matsukawa’s exceptional guitar skills. Released while he was a member of Blizard, “Burning” focuses heavily on instrumental compositions, allowing his virtuosic, neoclassical-influenced heavy metal style to shine.
The album features Matsukawa’s signature blend of technical speed, melodic phrasing, and strong songwriting, evident on tracks like “Named 1986 / Without You,” “Get The Free,” and “Illusion.” He enlisted a top-notch rhythm section comprising Masahiko Rokukawa on bass and Toru “Rika” Suzuki on drums, with keyboard support from Hiroyuki Namba and Yoshikazu Matsuura.
While predominantly instrumental, the album includes two significant vocal guest spots: Keiko Terada of Show-Ya lends her voice to “Ball And Chain,” and the track “Night Of The Beast” features vocals credited to “Mr. Crazy Tiger,” an early alias of Koshi Inaba, who would later achieve massive fame with B’z.
WTP-90366 stands as a significant release in the J-Metal guitar hero canon. “Burning” captures Matsukawa honoring his idol while demonstrating his own remarkable talent, supported by a stellar lineup including future superstars. The presence of the obi strip enhances its collectibility.
