Cruising Through Metal Realms: Misako Honjoh’s ‘The Cruiser’ (CI-17)
Today’s entry explores the third album in the legendary “Witch Trilogy” from pioneering Japanese female metal vocalist Misako Honjoh. We are focusing on “The Cruiser” (幻想の侵略者 – Gensō No Shinryakusha), released on the Continental label (Teichiku Records) with the catalog number CI-17.
Issued in 1983, this 10-track, 12-inch vinyl LP cemented Honjoh’s status as a powerhouse in the early Japanese heavy metal scene. Following “Messiah’s Blessing” and “13TH,” “The Cruiser” continued to deliver pure, unadulterated heavy metal energy, characteristic of her early, highly acclaimed work.
The album showcases Honjoh’s powerful vocals soaring over heavy, driving instrumentation. Reinforcing the album’s metal pedigree, it features significant support from members of other prominent Japanese hard rock and metal bands of the era, notably 5X and X-Ray, ensuring top-tier musicianship. An interesting international connection is found on track B1 (“Night Of The Beast”), which was penned by Atomik Tommy M. , known for his work in UFO.
“The Cruiser” (CI-17) stands as a classic of early 80s J-Metal. It captures Misako Honjoh at her heaviest, delivering powerful, traditional heavy metal anthems backed by exceptional players from the scene. It’s an essential piece for fans and collectors seeking the roots of Japanese heavy metal.
