A pivotal, and for some, polarizing, album in the career of Nagoya’s thrash legends Outrage is the focus for this entry. We are looking at their fifth major album, “Spit,” released on September 25, 1993, via ATCO Records (MMG Inc.) with the catalog number AMCM-4177.
This 10-track CD marked the band’s first release for the label and showcased a significant evolution in their sound. Produced and engineered by Joe Alexander, “Spit” moved away from the high-speed thrash of their earlier works. Instead, it delivered a powerful, mid-tempo, and groove-oriented “modern metal” sound, often compared by fans to the heavy, pounding feel of Metallica’s “Black Album” or Megadeth’s “Countdown to Extinction.”
While the lack of speed-thrash tunes divided some fans, the album is widely praised as a perfectly crafted work of heavy, cool, and “American-style” metal. It’s noted for its high-level musicianship, well-constructed songs, and a heavy groove. The vocals are also a highlight, delivered with a cool, gruff confidence.
“Spit” (AMCM-4177) stands as a high-quality, heavy, and mature statement, capturing Outrage’s powerful evolution in the 90s.
