Let’s focus on a 1994 release from the popular Japanese rock band ZIGGY, “Blond 007.” Released on July 27, 1994, via the Public Image Records label (catalog number TKCP-70441), this CD captures the band during their “unit” phase, centered around vocalist Morishige Juichi and bassist Toshiki Tsunida.

“Blond 007” marked a notable shift from the previous album, “Zoo & Ruby.” It’s often seen as a more technically proficient and “heavy rock” oriented album, a conscious effort by the band to prove their musical chops. To achieve this, they brought in high-caliber guest musicians, including legendary guitarist Atsushi Yokozeki and Vow Wow drummer Toshihiro Niimi.

The result is a musically rich album, with a thicker, heavier sound and complex instrumentation. It features tracks that incorporate new elements, such as rap-style vocals from Morishige on “Feel So Good.” However, the album also retains ZIGGY’s signature pop sensibility and melodic, catchy songwriting.

This created an interesting mix, balancing heavy/technical tracks like “Strollin’” with quintessential “Morishige” melodies like “12月の風になりたい” (12-gatsu no Kaze ni Naritai) and the hit single “Stay Gold.” While this diversity made the album somewhat complex to replicate live, “Blond 007” (TKCP-70441) stands as a fascinating and high-quality snapshot of ZIGGY’s technical ambition and evolving songwriting.
