Let’s spotlight the international debut album from Japanese female vocalist Saeko, “Above Heaven, Below Heaven.” Released on October 6, 2004, this CD (catalog number KICP 1025) was issued in Japan on the Nexus label as part of their “Metal Frontier” series.
Saeko, previously known as the vocalist for the Osaka-based heavy metal band Fairy Mirror, took a bold step by traveling to Germany to launch her solo career. There, she was discovered by Lars Ratz of the German power metal band Metalium, who produced this album.
“Above Heaven, Below Heaven” showcases Saeko’s talents as a vocalist, pianist, and keyboardist, fronting a powerful heavy metal sound. The album was recorded in Hamburg and features high-caliber backing from members of Metalium, with Ratz co-writing and Michael Ehré co-producing, drumming, and playing guitar, alongside guest lead guitarists Herman Frank and Sven Lüdke.
The 13-track album (including a bonus track) delivers a potent, European-style heavy metal assault, perfectly complementing Saeko’s vocals. It’s a significant release, documenting a Japanese artist successfully launching her career internationally with the backing of established European metal musicians.
