A stellar “supergroup” project from the Japanese hard rock scene is the focus for this entry: the self-titled debut album from Kings. Released on November 1, 1995, via the Polydor label (catalog number POCH-1539), this 9-track CD brought together a truly formidable lineup of J-Metal/Rock legends. This particular copy includes the original obi strip.
This 1995 album, “Kings,” was the debut from a new band composed of established “tsuwamono” (strong warriors) from the scene:
Shuichi Aoki (Night Hawks) on Vocals, Guitar, and Keyboards Luke Takamura (Seikima-II) on Guitar Taiji Sawada (X, Loudness, D.T.R) on Bass Satoshi “Joe” Miyawaki (44 Magnum, D.T.R) on DrumsAs expected from this lineup, the album unleashes a powerful, high-quality, orthodox hard rock sound from the very first track. Fans praise this as a serious, high-effort collaboration where each member’s formidable skills are on full display.
A major highlight is the incredible vocal performance of Shuichi Aoki. Often described as a “Japanese Coverdale,” he delivers a stunningly powerful, raw, thick, and “manly” high-tone vocal performance that perfectly fits the bluesy hard rock sound.
The album is packed with high-quality tracks, from hard-hitters like “Break Down” and “Are You Ready” to Whitesnake-esque rockers like “Not Throwing The Keys” and the beautiful ballad “1989 For 1994.” “Kings” (POCH-1539) stands as a must-listen for fans of orthodox hard rock, showcasing a dream lineup of Japanese musicians at the top of their game.
