A significant album in the Anthem discography is their sophomore effort, “Tightrope.” Released on April 21, 1986, via the Nexus label (King Records), this 12-inch vinyl LP (catalog number K28P 628) is considered a true classic that solidified their status as leaders of the Japanese heavy metal scene.

This album marked a major step up in production. It was the band’s first time using a foreign engineer, tapping Ken Kessie (known for his work with Santana, Y&T, and Blue Oyster Cult) to engineer and master the record. This resulted in a sound that was more scaled-up, speedier, and more polished than their debut, perfectly capturing their orthodox heavy metal power.

“Tightrope” showcases the classic early lineup in peak form. It’s particularly noted by fans for highlighting the songwriting contributions of guitarist Hiroya Fukuda, who composed several of the album’s tracks. His songs are often described as free-flowing and intuitive, contrasting nicely with the meticulously structured anthems penned by bassist Naoto Shibata.

The album is packed with high-quality songs, but it is most famous for containing the all-time fan-favorite and enduring classic, “Night After Night.” Other tracks like “Victim In Your Eyes” and the title track “Tightrope Dancer” also showcase the band’s blend of speed, melody, and power, all driven by the “Mad” Ohuchi’s drumming and Eizo Sakamoto’s soaring vocals.

The original release did not come with a traditional obi strip; instead, it featured a hype sticker on the outer shrinkwrap. It also included a fold-open lyric insert and, in some initial copies, a band sticker. K28P 628 remains an essential masterpiece for any fan of 80s Japanese heavy metal.
