A truly exceptional solo debut from a Japanese guitar hero, this entry focuses on Raven Ohtani’s (Marino) “Raven Eyes.” Released on July 21, 1984, via SMS Records (catalog number SP28-5100), this 12-inch vinyl LP showcases an artist with a deep, international musical vision. This particular copy includes the original obi strip.

“Raven Eyes” is the first solo album from the celebrated Marino guitarist. What makes it legendary is not just Ohtani’s playing, but the incredible lineup of top-tier British musicians he assembled at just 23 years old. Seeking the feel of the classic Jeff Beck Group, Ohtani impressively recruited actual members Clive Chaman (bass) and Max Middleton (keyboards).

The all-star session continues with Richard Bailey on drums, guest guitarist Snowy White, and a trio of powerhouse vocalists: Maggie Bell, Lenny Zakatek, and Alan Marshall. This lineup alone speaks to Ohtani’s exquisite musical taste.

The resulting album is a masterpiece of authentic British-style rock, fusion, and AOR, standing far apart from typical 80s J-Metal. Fans note the production quality is in a league of its own, capturing the unique grooves and “space” in Ohtani’s playing, which draws comparisons to Jeff Beck rather than contemporary shredders.

Highlights include the powerful tracks “Drive Me Crazy” and “Move Over” (sung by Maggie Bell), the beautiful instrumental “Soliloquy,” and the track “Without You,” which features a stunning guest solo from Snowy White. “Raven Eyes” remains a testament to Ohtani’s profound talent, a true “guitarist’s guitarist” who, at 23, created a timeless work of art.
