Let’s examine the crucial second and final album from the Japanese heavy metal band Flatbacker, titled “Esa” (餌 – Bait). Released on April 30, 1986, via the Invitation label (Victor), this 10-track, 12-inch vinyl LP (catalog number VIH-28245) stands as a landmark release in Japanese metal history.
Following their shocking 1985 debut “Accident,” “Esa” found the Hokkaido-based band evolving their unique sound. While still incredibly heavy and aggressive, “Esa” is often seen as showcasing an even greater level of power, musicianship, and songwriting sophistication. The music pushed the boundaries of thrash metal, punk, and hardcore, creating a unique, original sound. The band’s instrumental prowess is on full display: heavy, unique guitar riffs, high-speed double-bass drumming, and powerful bass, creating a furious sonic assault.
A key element that set Flatbacker apart was their lyrical style. This album continued their use of provocative Japanese lyrics that felt unique, intelligent, and sometimes playful, perfectly delivered by the vocalist’s immensely powerful, one-of-a-kind voice.
This album is historically significant as it was the final Japanese-language album from the band before they moved to the US and re-emerged as EZO with a different sound. “Esa” captures the band’s original, innovative vision at its peak. The incredible vocal talent on display here would later gain further fame when the singer joined Loudness in the 1990s.
“Esa” (VIH-28228), along with their debut, is considered an essential masterpiece of 80s Japanese metal, showcasing a band with a sound, power, and style that was truly ahead of its time. The release came complete with a glossy foldout insert.
