Let’s explore the sixth studio album from Japanese rock vocalist Misako Honjoh, “Dreamer.” Released on November 21, 1984, via the Continental label (Teichiku Records), this 12-inch vinyl LP (catalog number CI-29) captures a significant evolution in her sound. This particular copy includes the original obi strip.

Following her heavy metal-focused “Witch Trilogy” (which famously began at age 17 with production and backing by members of Loudness), “Dreamer” marked a noticeable shift. Many fans feel this album features a more natural vocal performance, moving away from forced shouting toward a style that better suited her voice, while still retaining a hard rock foundation.

The album is structured uniquely, opening with a “Prologue” and closing with an “Epilogue,” both based on a cover of the David Bowie classic, “All The Young Dudes.” This sets a distinct tone for the original tracks in between, such as “Vanity” and “Aura Mystery.”

“Dreamer” is also notable for its high-caliber backing musicians. The 9-track album features an all-star lineup of respected players from the Japanese rock scene, including Jun Aoyama on drums, Masanori Sasaji on keyboards, and guest guitar work from Raven Ohtani and Shin Yuasa.

CI-29 stands as an important release in Misako Honjoh’s discography, showcasing her transition to a more melodic and perhaps more comfortable rock style, supported by a “luxurious” cast of guest musicians.
