A foundational album in Japanese heavy metal history is the focus of this entry: the debut from pioneering female vocalist Misako Honjoh. “Messiah’s Blessing” (Majo Densetsu) was released on October 21, 1982, on Teichiku Records with the catalog number TL-1. This 10-track, 12-inch LP kicked off her famous “Witch Trilogy” and made an immediate, powerful impact.
The album’s immense power and historical significance come from its production and backing band. It was sound-produced by Akira Takasaki of Loudness, who also played guitar. The core rhythm section was essentially the rest of Loudness: Munetaka Higuchi on drums (sharing duties on two tracks) and Masayoshi Yamashita on bass. Minoru Niihara (Loudness) also provided backing vocals, and Toshio Egawa (Novela) handled keyboards.
This all-star lineup delivered a potent, hard-hitting heavy metal sound. The 10-track album is notable for featuring six cover songs, showcasing the band’s influences while being adapted for Honjoh (often with Japanese lyrics). The covers include Riot’s “Warrior,” Cream’s “White Room,” Pat Benatar’s “Hell Is For Children,” Rainbow’s “Lost In Hollywood,” Slade’s “Cum On Feel The Noize,” and even a cover of Loudness’ own “After Illusion.”
TL-1 stands as a crucial J-Metal document, launching the career of one of Japan’s first female metal vocalists with an absolutely legendary backing band drawn from the scene’s biggest acts.
