A New Voyage: Misako Honjoh’s ‘The Cruiser’ (CI-17)
Let’s explore the third and final installment of the influential “Witch Trilogy” from pioneering Japanese female metal vocalist Misako Honjoh. This is her 1983 album, “The Cruiser” (幻想の侵略者), released on the Continental label (Teichiku Records) with the catalog number CI-17. This particular copy includes the original obi strip.
Issued on July 21, 1983, this 10-track, 12-inch vinyl LP marked a significant change in direction. While her first two albums were produced by and featured the members of Loudness, “The Cruiser” was produced by George Azuma, the leader and guitarist of the hard rock band 5X.
This shift brought in a new lineup of skilled musicians to back Honjoh, featuring support from members of both 5X and X-Ray. The album boasts contributions from top-tier players like Shin Yuasa (X-Ray) on guitar, Akira Fujimoto (X-Ray) on chorus, keyboardists Masashi Namba and Toshio Egawa, Kinta Moriyama on bass, and Jun Harada on drums, alongside Azuma himself. This change resulted in a noticeable stylistic evolution, moving from the raw metal of its predecessors to a more polished, melodic, and at times “poppier” hard rock sound, reflecting Azuma’s production style.
“The Cruiser” (CI-17) stands as a crucial album in Misako Honjoh’s discography, concluding her debut trilogy with a different sound and a different lineup of J-Metal all-stars. The original release came complete with an obi and a 4-page bilingual lyric insert.
