A revolutionary debut marks this entry, focusing on the album that truly ignited the Japanese heavy metal movement: Loudness’ “The Birthday Eve.” Released on November 25, 1981, this 12-inch vinyl LP was issued on the Blow Up label (Nippon Columbia) with the catalog number AF-7085-A. This particular copy includes the original obi strip.

This album was a groundbreaking, powerful statement. It marked the first release from the band formed by guitarist Akira Takasaki and drummer Munetaka Higuchi after their departure from the pop-idol group Lazy. “The Birthday Eve” was their uncompromising return to their hard rock and heavy metal roots, produced by Daikoh Nagato and sound-produced by the band itself.

Often described as the “roar of a newborn dinosaur,” this 8-track album captures the band’s raw, punkish energy and early impulse. Recorded at Chestnut Studio and Studio Birdman, it showcases the classic lineup: Minoru Niihara on vocals, Takasaki on guitar, Masayoshi Yamashita on bass, and Higuchi on drums. The album unleashed a torrent of heavy metal anthems, including the iconic title track “Loudness,” “Sexy Woman,” “I’m On Fire,” and “Rock Shock.”

Takasaki’s guitar work was immediately recognized as being on a revolutionary level for the Japanese scene. “The Birthday Eve” (AF-7085-A) stands as a foundational text in J-Metal history, capturing the raw, untamed beginning of Japan’s most legendary heavy metal band. This first pressing came complete with an obi and a 4-page insert with liner notes, lyrics, and credits.
