Embracing the Flame: Mari Hamada’s ‘Romantic Night’ (VIH-28153)

Let’s explore the powerful second studio album from Japan’s queen of heavy metal, Mari Hamada. This is “Romantic Night” (炎の誓い – Flame of Vow), released in 1983 on the Invitation label (Victor) with the catalog number VIH-28153.

This 10-track, 12-inch vinyl LP arrived quickly after her debut, “Lunatic Doll,” and firmly cemented her status as a heavy metal powerhouse. Crucially, the album was sound-produced by the legendary Munetaka Higuchi (Loudness), who also provided his signature thunderous drumming. The album also features skilled guitar work from Kenji Kitajima.

“Romantic Night” is often noted by fans for the striking contrast between its idol-like cover photography and the “tough-looking,” aggressive heavy metal and speed metal sound it contains, a far cry from the pop image she would later embrace. It showcases Hamada’s incredible vocal power perfectly suited for heavy music.

The album is packed with classic tracks, but the opener, “Don’t Change Your Mind,” is frequently hailed as a true masterpiece of Japanese metal history—a “tremendous song” that demonstrates Hamada’s irreplaceable, powerful vocal delivery. Other highlights like “Violence Fire,” “Xanadu,” and the title track further establish the album’s heavy credentials.

VIH-28175 stands as a special and essential release in Hamada’s discography, capturing her at her raw, heavy metal peak. It’s a perfect document of her early power, proving her status as a one-of-a-kind vocalist in the genre.
