Today we are looking at a record from one of the classic bands of the 1980s Japanese heavy metal scene: “Rock’n Roll” by PRESENCE, catalog number K13P703.
This particular item is a 12-inch vinyl released in 1987 on the Nexus label, which was distributed by King Records. Running at 33 1/3 RPM, this release functions as a powerful mini-album or EP that captures the band’s sound at a critical moment.
PRESENCE was a significant force in the “Japa-meta” movement. Formed in 1982, the band’s classic lineup featured the charismatic, high-pitched vocals of Shigeru “SHIGERU” Nishikawa, the virtuosic and melodic guitar work of Kazuhide “RUDY” Shirata, the driving basslines of Kaito “RADY” Onda, and the solid drumming of Hiroaki “HIBARI” Okamoto.
This “Rock’n Roll” 12-inch was released in 1987, the very same year the group made their major label debut with their first full-length album. This release showcases the band’s polished, anthemic, and powerful hard rock sound. The title track, “Rock’n Roll,” is a perfect example of their style, combining a catchy, driving riff with Nishikawa’s soaring vocals.
This record is not only a fantastic piece of 80s Japanese metal but also a fascinating piece of music history. After PRESENCE disbanded, its members went on to other high-profile projects. Most notably, bassist Kaito “RADY” Onda would later achieve massive mainstream success as the bassist and a primary songwriter for the multi-million-selling J-rock band JUDY AND MARY.
