Let’s focus on the sophomore album from the influential Japanese melodic metal band X-Ray. This is “Tradition Breaker” (伝統破壊), released on the Continental label (Teichiku Records) with catalog number CI-22. This copy includes the original obi strip.

Issued on January 21, 1984, this 12-inch vinyl LP followed their successful debut, “Hard Section.” This second album is widely regarded as a masterpiece that truly established X-Ray’s popularity. It successfully built upon the hard rock and heavy metal foundation of their debut by incorporating more pronounced pop elements and catchier melodies.

“Tradition Breaker” showcased the band’s full potential, highlighting their high technical skill, sophisticated arrangement abilities, and powerful instrumentation. This blend of hard-edged performance with accessible, pop-infused songwriting became a defining characteristic of their sound. The album features a strong set of tracks, with fan favorites often cited as “Willful Lady,” “Gamblin’ Man,” and the powerful closer, “Last Show Time.”

CI-22 stands as a crucial release in X-Ray’s discography, perfectly capturing their ability to merge heavy metal power with refined melodic songwriting, solidifying their status as leaders in the 80s J-Metal scene.
