Breaking with Tradition: X-Ray’s Sophomore Album ‘Tradition Breaker’ (CI-22)

Continuing our journey through classic J-Metal, we spotlight the sophomore album from the influential band X-Ray. This is “Tradition Breaker” (伝統破壊), released on the Continental label (Teichiku Records) with catalog number CI-22.

Issued on January 21, 1984, this 12-inch vinyl LP followed their successful debut, “Hard Section,” solidifying X-Ray’s position as leaders in the melodic heavy metal movement within Japan. Arriving quickly after their first album, “Tradition Breaker” showcased the band’s continued creative drive.

Produced by Toshi Nakashita and recorded at Mediabum and Starship Studios, the album further refines the band’s signature style: a polished blend of powerful heavy metal riffing, intricate and melodic guitar solos, soaring clean vocals, and a driving rhythm section. Across its nine tracks, including standouts like “Question,” “Go Against The World,” “Power,” and “Born To Die,” the album exemplifies their ability to combine technical proficiency with strong, memorable songwriting – a hallmark of classic 80s J-Metal.

The release came packaged with a double-sided insert, likely containing lyrics and band information. CI-22 stands as a crucial second step for X-Ray, demonstrating their consistency and skill in crafting high-quality melodic heavy metal. “Tradition Breaker” remains an essential album for fans of the genre and the era.
