A Strange Star Rises: Silver Stars’ Debut ‘Ginseidan’ (TRSH-1001)
Today’s entry explores a truly unique and somewhat enigmatic release from the dawn of Japan’s heavier rock scene: the debut album “Ginseidan” (銀星団 – often referred to as self-titled) by the band Silver Stars. This 12-inch vinyl LP was issued in 1979 on the independent Trash Record label with the catalog number TRSH-1001.
“Ginseidan” stands out immediately due to its eclectic mix of styles. While rooted in the hard rock and emerging heavy metal sounds of the late 70s, the album incorporates unusual elements for the time, including synth-pop textures, space rock influences, and even a cover of the jazz standard “Take Five” by Paul Desmond. This genre-bending approach, combined with potentially provocative or strange themes suggested by the artwork and song titles, makes it a fascinating listen.
The album features musicians operating under pseudonyms (like Rayzor Cruiser and Richard Hope), adding to its mystique. Historical notes offer conflicting accounts of the band’s origins – some suggest members were roadies for the legendary hard rock band Bow Wow, while others link Bow Wow’s own guitar virtuoso, Kyoji Yamamoto, directly to leading the Silver Stars project. Regardless of the exact connection, the timing places Silver Stars firmly within the foundational era of Japanese hard rock.
Adding to the album’s peculiarity is the included insert, reportedly featuring poorly written Chinese text alongside English lyrics, with the Chinese translations allegedly carrying different, sometimes darker, connotations.
TRSH-1001 is a rare and bizarre artifact from the late 70s Japanese rock underground. For collectors seeking the unusual and historically significant, Silver Stars’ debut offers a strange and compelling blend of musical styles and conceptual intrigue, linked to the early evolution of Japanese hard rock.
