The Genesis of EZO: Flatbacker’s Debut ‘Accident’ (VIH-28228)

Today’s entry focuses on the powerful debut album from the Japanese heavy metal band Flatbacker, titled “Accident” (戦争 – Sensou / War), released on the Invitation label (Victor) with the catalog number VIH-28228.

Issued on October 31, 1985, this 12-inch vinyl LP marked the explosive arrival of a band that would soon achieve international recognition under a different name. Flatbacker quickly gained notoriety for their intense and aggressive brand of heavy metal, often incorporating elements of speed metal.

Produced by Seiichiro Ishihara and arranged by the band themselves, “Accident” unleashes a ferocious sonic assault. Recorded at Sunrise and Magnet Studios, the album features tracks like “Hard Blow,” “Deathwish,” “Massacre,” and the title track, showcasing blistering guitar work, powerful and high-pitched vocals, a thunderous rhythm section, and the raw energy characteristic of mid-80s heavy and speed metal. The packaging included an obi strip and a 4-page insert with lyrics and photos.

This album is historically crucial as it represents the first major statement from the band that would later be signed to an American label and renamed EZO. “Accident” (VIH-28228) captures the raw, untamed power of the band in their original incarnation, laying the groundwork for their future international endeavors. It remains an essential release for fans of classic J-Metal and the origins of EZO.
