A monumental album in Japanese rock history is the focus today: the major label debut from X, titled “Blue Blood.” Released on April 21, 1989, via CBS/Sony’s Siren Song label, this CD (catalog number 32DH 5224) marked the band’s explosive arrival in the mainstream. This particular copy includes the original obi strip.
Following the massive success of their independent album “Vanishing Vision,” “Blue Blood” was a highly anticipated release. Produced by the band and co-produced by Naoshi Tsuda, it’s an ambitious, sprawling album that perfectly balances ferocious speed metal, intricate symphonic arrangements, and epic, emotional ballads.
The 12-track album is packed with songs that became legendary. It opens with a cover of Frank Marino’s “World Anthem,” before launching into signature X anthems like the title track “Blue Blood,” “Week End,” and the iconic, breakthrough hit “紅” (Kurenai). It also features the massive ballad “Endless Rain” and the aggressive fan-favorites “X” and “オルガスム” (Orgasm), which famously feature “chorus” contributions from a massive list of friends and peers from the underground/indie scene (including members of Gastunk, Ladies Room, Poison Arts, etc.).
“Blue Blood” (32DH 5224) is a landmark release. It showcased the classic lineup of Toshi (vocals), hide (guitar), Pata (guitar), Taiji (bass), and Yoshiki (drums, piano) at their absolute peak, successfully bringing their complex and aggressive vision to a massive audience and changing the face of Japanese rock forever.
