MANUEL AND THE MUSIC OF THE MOUNTAINS aranjuez, mon amour EMS80518

A monumental and ambitious work from Japanese rock legends X Japan is the focus for this entry. We are looking at their 1993 mini-album, “Art Of Life,” released on the Atlantic label (EastWest Japan) with the catalog number AMCM-4170. This specific CD is the regular edition reissue of the groundbreaking work.
This release is unique in the band’s catalog, as it consists of a single, sprawling track: “Art Of Life,” clocking in at 29 minutes.
Co-produced by Yoshiki and the band, “Art Of Life” is an epic, multi-part suite. It masterfully blends aggressive speed metal, soaring heavy metal, intricate symphonic movements, and complex progressive rock passages, famously including extended piano solos.
The album showcases the band’s lineup of the era: Toshi (vocals), hide (guitar), Pata (guitar), Heath (bass, in his first major studio recording with the band), and Yoshiki (drums, piano, synthesizer), who also handled all music, lyrics, and production.
AMCM-4170 stands as one of X Japan’s most definitive and ambitious artistic statements, a complex journey that encapsulates their entire musical spectrum—from raw aggression to beautiful, classical-inspired melody—in a single track.
