A Hard Rock Supergroup Summit: Tak Matsumoto Group’s “TMG I”
When world-class musicians from different legendary bands join forces, the results can be truly explosive. A prime example is the 2004 debut album from the international hard rock supergroup, Tak Matsumoto Group, titled “TMG I.” We are looking at the Japanese CD release on the Vermillion Records label, with the catalog number BMCV-8010.
This project was the brainchild of Tak Matsumoto, the iconic and virtuosic guitarist of the Japanese rock institution, B’z. For TMG, he assembled a truly stellar lineup: Eric Martin (the powerhouse vocalist of Mr. Big) on lead vocals, Jack Blades (of Night Ranger and Damn Yankees fame) on bass and backing vocals, and the solid drumming of Chris Frazier anchoring the rhythm section.
“TMG I” is a masterclass in high-energy, expertly crafted melodic hard rock. The album seamlessly blends the signature styles of its famous members. Matsumoto’s incredible guitar work is front and center, with fiery riffs, intricate solos, and his unique melodic sensibility. Eric Martin delivers a typically passionate and powerful vocal performance, his voice soaring over the driving rock tracks. Jack Blades brings his renowned songwriting skills and solid bass playing to the mix, contributing significantly to the album’s strong, catchy hooks.
The album is packed with memorable songs, from hard-rocking anthems to more blues-inflected numbers, all showcasing the incredible chemistry between these seasoned veterans. It features the hit single “Oh Japan Our Time is Now,” a powerful statement from this international collaboration. “TMG I” is not just a side project; it’s a top-tier hard rock album that stands proudly alongside the best work of the members’ main bands.
For any fan of B’z, Mr. Big, Night Ranger, or just high-quality, guitar-driven melodic hard rock, “TMG I” is an absolutely essential and thrilling listen. You can find this album on our website.
