A truly legendary and incredibly rare piece of Japanese metal history is the focus for this entry: the debut 7-inch single from X, “I’ll Kill You.” Released in June 1985 on the independent Dada Record label, this vinyl (catalog number DA-001) marks the very first self-produced release from the band that would conquer the nation as X Japan.
This 33 ⅓ RPM single was famously limited to only 1000 copies and sold out immediately, cementing its mythical status. It captures the band’s raw, shocking, and ferocious early sound, a potent blend of speed metal and heavy metal.
The single features two tracks:
A: I’ll Kill You
B: Break The Darkness
This release documents a very early lineup of the band, featuring the core duo of Toshimitsu Deyama (Toshi) on vocals and Yoshiki Hayashi (Yoshiki) on drums, who also penned the music and lyrics. The lineup was rounded out by Atsushi Tokuo on bass and guitarists Tomoyuki Ogata and Yuji Izumisawa.
DA-001 is a foundational artifact, a holy grail for collectors, and a snapshot of the raw, untamed ambition of X, right at the very beginning of their revolutionary journey.
