A 7-inch single from Japanese hard rock band Bow Wow’s controversial “pop” phase is the focus for this entry. We are looking at their 1980 release, “Rainy Train,” issued on SMS Records with the catalog number SM06-54、sample pressing with white labels.
This 45 RPM vinyl captures the band deep in their exploration of a pop-rock fusion, a sound they pursued between their harder-edged 70s albums and their 80s heavy metal return. Released in May 1980, just three months after their previous single, this was part of a clear push for a mainstream hit.
The single features two tracks:
A: Rainy Train
B: Last Song
The A-side, “Rainy Train,” is a polished pop-rock number arranged by Kyoji Yamamoto and Takao Naoi. The B-side, “Last Song,” is a ballad written and arranged by Yamamoto. This release is often seen as one of the final examples of this pop-oriented style, as the band would soon pivot back to a more aggressive hard rock and heavy metal sound with their next albums. SM06-54 stands as a fascinating snapshot of Bow Wow’s brief but significant stylistic detour.
