Forging a Heavier Edge: Megumi Hayakawa’s ‘Metal Version’ Mini-Album (WTP-40199)
Today we explore another release from Japanese female rock vocalist Megumi Hayakawa (早川めぐみ), focusing on her 1987 mini-album, “Metal Version,” released on the Eastworld label (Toshiba EMI) with the catalog number WTP-40199.
This 12-inch, 45 RPM vinyl mini-album arrived a year after her polished debut, “Face To Face.” As the title explicitly suggests, “Metal Version” signaled a deliberate shift towards a harder-edged, more explicitly heavy metal sound compared to the AOR/melodic hard rock leanings of her first full-length.
Produced once again by the highly respected Masanori Sasaji, the four-track mini-album offered a concentrated blast of this heavier direction while maintaining a high level of production quality. It provided a platform for Hayakawa to showcase her powerful vocals against a backdrop of more aggressive instrumentation.
These songs feature more aggressive guitar riffs, potentially faster tempos, and a driving rhythm section characteristic of the mid-to-late 80s J-Metal sound, all supporting Hayakawa’s commanding voice. WTP-40199 represents an interesting point in Hayakawa’s discography, showcasing her versatility and willingness to embrace a more straightforward heavy metal approach, expertly executed with the help of legendary backing musicians.
