A New Chapter Begins: Earthshaker’s ‘Aftershock’ (RT28-5003)

Today we again turn our attention to the highly influential Japanese hard rock band Earthshaker and their 1987 studio album, “Aftershock,” carrying the catalog number RT28-5003 with obi.

This 12-inch vinyl LP holds particular significance as it marked the band’s debut release on the major Eastworld label (Toshiba EMI), following their successful and genre-defining run with Nexus/King Records. Arriving in 1987, “Aftershock” showcased a band confidently entering a new phase of their career.

While the move to a new label often brings subtle shifts in sound, “Aftershock” fundamentally builds upon the melodic hard rock foundation Earthshaker was celebrated for. The album features the band’s signature blend of powerful, emotionally resonant vocals and skillful, catchy guitar work, all anchored by a tight and dynamic rhythm section. However, reflecting the production trends of the late 80s, the overall sound is likely more polished and refined compared to their earliest, rawest output, potentially incorporating more sophisticated arrangements or keyboard textures suitable for the era.

“Aftershock” delivers a collection of high-quality melodic rock tracks, demonstrating the band’s consistent ability to craft compelling songs. RT28-5003 represents Earthshaker successfully navigating their transition to a new label home, offering fans a mature yet still powerful take on their beloved sound, and solidifying their status as veterans of the Japanese rock scene.
