Riding the Wave: Earthshaker’s ‘Aftershock’ (RT28-5003)
Today we revisit Japanese hard rock legends Earthshaker, focusing on their 1987 studio album, “Aftershock,” released with the catalog number RT28-5003.
This 12-inch vinyl LP marks a significant transition for the band, as it represents their move to the Eastworld label (Toshiba EMI) after a highly successful run on Nexus/King Records. Released in 1987, “Aftershock” followed their established run of classic melodic heavy metal albums.
This label change often coincided with a stylistic shift for bands during this era, and “Aftershock” sees Earthshaker embracing a more polished, refined sound. While still firmly rooted in their signature melodic hard rock style, the album likely incorporates smoother production, potentially more prominent keyboard textures, and arrangements leaning towards the AOR (Adult Oriented Rock) influences prevalent in the late 80s rock scene.
Despite the sonic evolution, the core strengths of Earthshaker remain: powerful and emotive vocals, skillful and melodic guitar work, and a tight, driving rhythm section. “Aftershock” delivers a collection of well-crafted rock songs, showcasing the band adapting their sound for a new era while maintaining their musical identity.
RT28-5003 is an important album for understanding Earthshaker’s later 80s output and their transition to a new major label. It captures the band navigating evolving musical trends, offering a polished take on their renowned melodic hard rock sound.
