A Pop Outing from a Legendary Voice Actor: Yuji Mitsuya’s “To Nicole”
In the 1980s, the line between Japanese pop star and voice actor (“seiyuu”) often blurred, as the most popular seiyuu became huge stars in their own right. Yuji Mitsuya is one of the most legendary and beloved voice actors of all time, known for his iconic roles in countless classic anime. In 1980, he released his own personal music album, “To Nicole,” which we are looking at here in its Japanese pressing on the King label with the catalog number K25A-117.
This album is not a collection of character songs from his anime, but a full-fledged solo pop album. It’s a wonderful example of 1980s Japanese pop, filled with 11 tracks of light, melodic, and breezy songs that are characteristic of the era. The sound blends soft rock and pop, all built around Mitsuya’s pleasant and clear singing voice.
This record is a fascinating and charming piece of Japanese pop culture. It offers fans of his voice work a chance to hear him in a completely different context, performing as a pop vocalist. For anyone who collects 80s Japanese pop or is a fan of classic anime, this album is a wonderful snapshot of a multi-talented superstar at the height of his fame. You can find this album on our website.
