NWOBHM Energy with a Glam Twist: Torme’s “So You Wanna Be a Star”
The New Wave of British Heavy Metal was a sprawling and diverse scene, and within it were bands that brought their own unique influences to the table. A fantastic example of this is the 12-inch EP from the band Torme, titled “So You Wanna Be a Star,” released on the Razor Records label with the catalog number 12RA6.
Torme was formed by guitarist Bernie Tormé, who had already made a name for himself playing with Ian Gillan’s solo band and, most famously, stepping in for the legendary Randy Rhoads in Ozzy Osbourne’s band for a short but crucial period. With his own band, he forged a sound that combined the raw energy of the NWOBHM with a distinct and flamboyant glam rock sensibility.
This 1982 EP is a perfect snapshot of their style. The title track, “So You Wanna Be a Star,” is a brilliant piece of commentary on the music industry, wrapped in a catchy, hard-rocking package. The song is driven by Tormé’s fiery and melodic guitar work, which is both technically impressive and full of swagger. The vocals are powerful and charismatic, perfectly suiting the song’s slightly cynical yet anthemic feel.
The EP format gives the band room to stretch out, and the other tracks continue to showcase their powerful, glam-infused brand of heavy rock. The music is energetic, hook-laden, and carries a sense of street-level attitude that was a hallmark of the era. It’s less about fantasy themes and more about the raw, real world of rock and roll.
For any fan of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal who appreciates a bit of glam rock flash and virtuosic guitar playing, this Torme EP is an essential find. It’s a powerful and stylish statement from a seasoned and incredibly talented musician. You can find this classic EP in our store or on our website.
