Welcome to the Whimsical World of “TULIP LAND”

Tulip were one of the most important and beloved bands of Japan’s “New Music” scene in the 1970s. Led by the brilliant songwriter Kazuo Zaitsu, their sound was a perfect, sophisticated blend of Beatles-esque melodies, folk-rock sensibilities, and lush pop arrangements. A wonderful example of their creative ambition is their 1977 concept album, “TULIP LAND,” which we’re looking at here in its Japanese sample white labels pressing on the Express label with the catalog number ETP-50100.

This album, their 10th studio release, is a beautifully crafted and immersive listening experience. As the title suggests, “TULIP LAND” is designed as a journey through a whimsical, imaginary place, with the songs all tying into a central theme. The album showcases the band at a creative peak, with Zaitsu’s songwriting at its most imaginative and the band’s musicianship polished to perfection.

The music is a collection of exquisitely arranged pop songs. The melodies are, as always with Tulip, incredibly strong and memorable. The album flows with a sense of wonder and gentle nostalgia, filled with intricate vocal harmonies, beautiful string and keyboard textures, and the band’s signature, tasteful rock instrumentation. It’s a record that invites the listener to get lost in its complete, self-contained world.

For any fan of 70s Japanese pop, “New Music,” or just brilliantly crafted, ambitious pop albums, “TULIP LAND” is an essential and delightful listen. You can find this album on our website.
