A live document capturing Loudness at their absolute peak is “8186 Live.” Released on November 10, 1986, this 2LP set (catalog number P-6246~7) was issued by ATCO Records.
This double album was recorded during their massive “World Circuit ’86 Chapter III” tour at Yoyogi Olympic Pool, a tour which celebrated the band’s 5th anniversary. It captures Loudness right after their major international breakthrough, when they were arguably at the height of their powers.
Produced by the band, “8186 Live” is a testament to their incredible live prowess, with many fans noting the performances equal or even surpass the studio versions. The sound quality is clear, capturing the band in top form: Akira Takasaki’s guitar is sharp and blazing, the rhythm section (Masayoshi Yamashita and Munetaka Higuchi) is powerful (featuring excellent solos), and Minoru Niihara’s unique, charismatic vocals are at their peak. His beloved MC moments are also a highlight for Japanese fans.
The tracklist is a wide-ranging “greatest hits” of their career up to that point, from early classics like “Loudness,” “In The Mirror,” and “Speed” to their recent international hits like “Crazy Night,” “Let It Go,” and “Shadows Of War” (here titled in its English form, “Ashes In The Sky”). The audience’s excitement is palpable, reflecting the long-awaited return of the band after focusing on overseas activities.
“8186 Live” is often cited as the band’s best live album and a perfect entry point for new listeners. It’s a gorgeous-sounding, high-quality document of a legendary band at the zenith of their skills and popularity. The original release came with a 4-page color insert and a survey postcard.
