A Transformation in Sound: Misako Honjoh’s ‘Majo Kara Yousei Ni’ (CI-32)

Continuing our journey through the discography of pioneering Japanese female metal vocalist Misako Honjoh, we arrive at her 1985 album “Majo Kara Yousei Ni” (roughly translating to “From Witch to Fairy”). This 12-inch vinyl LP was released on the Continental label (Teichiku Records) with the catalog number CI-32 with obi.

This album marks her sixth studio release and, as the evocative title suggests, represents a significant point in her stylistic evolution. Coming after her initial “Witch Trilogy” of pure heavy metal albums and subsequent releases that began exploring different sounds, “Majo Kara Yousei Ni” further embraces a shift towards more melodic hard rock, blending her powerful vocal delivery with catchier arrangements and potentially AOR influences, while still retaining a hard rock edge.

As was common with Honjoh’s albums, “Majo Kara Yousei Ni” features performances from a cast of highly skilled musicians drawn from Japan’s elite hard rock and heavy metal scene. The credits boast contributions from legendary figures like Munetaka Higuchi (Loudness) on drums and Satoshi “Joe” Miyawaki (44 Magnum) on drums for different tracks, alongside other respected players from bands such as Make-Up and Terra Rosa. This ensured a high level of musicianship backing Honjoh’s evolving sound.

CI-32 is a fascinating album that captures Misako Honjoh navigating the transition from a heavy metal icon to a broader hard rock artist. It stands as a quality example of mid-80s Japanese rock, showcasing her versatility and the top-tier talent she collaborated with.
