A spotlight lands on the second and final Japanese studio album from the heavy metal band Flatbacker, titled “Esa” (餌 – Prey/Feed). Released on April 30, 1986, via the Invitation label (Victor), this 12-inch vinyl LP (catalog number VIH-28245) is a crucial piece of J-Metal history. This particular copy includes the original obi strip.
Following their ferocious debut “Accident,” “Esa” continues Flatbacker’s aggressive assault. This 10-track album delivers a barrage of pure, high-energy heavy metal and speed metal, characterized by blistering guitar riffs, a pounding, high-speed rhythm section, and the signature powerful, high-pitched vocals of Masaki Yamada. The release came packaged with a glossy foldout insert.
This album is historically vital as it was the last record the band released as Flatbacker. Shortly after this, they would be signed to an American label, relocate to the US, and re-emerge internationally as EZO. It also prominently features the formidable vocal talents of Yamada, who would later gain further fame as the frontman for Loudness during the 1990s.
“Esa” (VIH-28245) captures the raw, untamed power of the band in their original incarnation, right before their international transformation. For fans of EZO, classic J-Metal, and Masaki Yamada’s early work, this album remains an essential document of pure Japanese speed metal.
