Let’s explore a gem from the Japanese independent heavy metal scene of the mid-80s: the debut album from the band Jewel, titled “Jewel I.” Released in 1986 on the notable Mandrake Root Records label, this 12-inch vinyl LP carries the catalog number 28MR-LP-006.
This album stands as a quintessential example of 80s Japanese indie metal. It delivers a powerful, high-energy assault of classic heavy metal across its eight tracks, including “Catch The Shine,” “Mistake Action,” “Want You,” and “Crazy Night.” The sound is characterized by driving riffs, powerful vocals, and the raw, energetic production typical of the underground scene.
“Jewel I” is also notable for a couple of key features. First, initial pressings of the album came with a bonus 7-inch flexi-disc, featuring a live version of the song “Sing It,” making it a highly sought-after item for collectors. Second, the album boasts a guest appearance from another respected figure in the scene: guitarist Taiji Fujimoto (of the band Dancer) provides the lead guitar on the track “Looser.”
For enthusiasts of classic, raw 80s J-Metal and the output of the influential Mandrake Root label, “Jewel I” (28MR-LP-006) remains an essential and powerful debut.
