This entry focuses on a fascinating and stylistically diverse album in Lazy’s discography, their fourth studio LP (fifth release overall), “Lazy V.” Released on April 5, 1980, via the RCA label, this 12-inch vinyl (catalog number RVL-15005) captures the band navigating the pop sounds of the new decade. This particular copy includes the original obi strip.
“Lazy V” marked a distinct stylistic turn. It incorporated a strong early 80s pop, soul, and disco flavor, consciously moving away from a previous, more original-focused style. This is evident in the inclusion of soul/disco cover songs (“Wild Flower,” “Goin’ Back To China”) and new material penned by outside city-pop hitmakers like Kingo Hamada and Haruo Chikada.
Despite this polished pop direction, the album retains the band’s core catchiness while also containing what many fans perceive as hints or “premonitions” of the hard rock declaration they would make later that same year. It showcases the musicianship of future Loudness founders Akira Takasaki and Munetaka Higuchi, albeit in a lighter context.
“Lazy V” (RVL-15005) is highly regarded by fans as a high-quality pop-rock album from their catalog, often considered second only to their final hard rock masterpiece, “Earth Ark.” It came complete with an obi and a lyrics insert.
