EPICA the alchemy project AFR0064V

Released on November 11, 2022, The Alchemy Project is a unique collaborative mini-album from the Dutch symphonic metal titans, Epica. Marking the conclusion of their 20th anniversary celebrations, this seven-track EP represents the band’s most diverse sonic experiment to date. Rather than a standard Epica release, every single track was co-written and recorded with a diverse roster of guest musicians, resulting in a stylistic journey that ranges from progressive death metal to haunting, folk-infused lullabies.

The “alchemy” of the title refers to the blending of Epica’s signature symphonic bombast with the distinct flavors of their guests. The project features an impressive lineup of collaborators:

- Extremists: Fleshgod Apocalypse (on the massive opener “The Great Tribulation”), Sven de Caluwé of Aborted, and God Dethroned.

- Melodic Masters: Tommy Karevik (Kamelot) and Phil Lanzon (Uriah Heep) on the rock-opera-inspired “Wake the World.”

- Symphonic Icons: A once-in-a-lifetime trio of female voices featuring Simone Simons, Charlotte Wessels, and Myrkur on the ethereal “Sirens – Of Blood and Water.”

- Experimentalists: The Norwegian band Shining, who bring an avant-garde jazz-metal edge and a saxophone solo to “The Final Lullaby.”

This specific European edition (AFR0064V), released via Atomic Fire Records, is a strictly limited pressing that visually captures the toxic and alchemical theme of the music.

- Toxic Green Vinyl: The record is pressed on a vibrant Toxic Green wax, a semi-translucent neon hue that stands out in any collection.

- Hype Sticker: This copy is preserved in its original shrink wrap and features a descriptive hype sticker on the front, identifying the limited nature of the green vinyl variant and the Atomic Fire label branding.

- Production Quality: Produced and mixed by the band’s longtime collaborator Joost van den Broek, the vinyl mastering preserves the immense dynamic range required to balance full orchestral arrangements with crushing death metal percussion.

The album features vivid and surprisingly witty artwork by the renowned graphic artist Heilemania (Stefan Heilemann). The cover art depicts a cryptic, alchemical laboratory scene that perfectly mirrors the experimental “collaborative laboratory” concept of the music itself.
