The Okinawan Dawn: Murasaki’s Landmark Self-Titled Debut (BMC-3004)
Let’s spotlight a foundational album of Japanese hard rock, the self-titled debut from the Okinawan band Murasaki. Released on April 1, 1976, by Bourbon Records, this 12-inch vinyl LP (catalog number BMC-3004) is a true classic. This copy includes the original translucent washi paper obi strip.
Hailing from Okinawa, Murasaki honed their exceptional musical skills by playing long, demanding sets for US soldiers in live houses (like in Koza). This experience forged a tight, powerful band with an outstanding playing ability and rhythmic drive.
Produced by band leader and keyboardist George Murasaki, the album is a masterpiece of 70s hard rock, heavily inspired by their namesake, Deep Purple. The sound is characterized by the prominent, virtuosic interplay between keyboards and heavy guitars, backed by a powerful rhythm section. At the time, they were noted for their “authentic” sound, helped by the fact that all lyrics are in English, delivered powerfully.
The album opens with the legendary track “Double Dealing Woman,” considered a masterpiece in its own right, and also features a faithful cover of Deep Purple’s “Lazy.” “Murasaki” (BMC-3004) is more than just a debut; it’s a pioneering work that brought the Okinawan rock scene to national attention and stands as one of the most important albums in Japanese hard rock history.
