The Dark Symphonic Side: Glenn Danzig’s ‘Black Aria’ Crystal Blue Vinyl (CLO3668)

Today’s entry explores the atmospheric, instrumental debut from the punk and metal icon. We are examining the 2023 Limited Edition reissue of Black Aria by Glenn Danzig, released by Cleopatra Records (in association with Evilive) with the catalog number CLO3668.

A Classical Chart-Topper

Originally released in 1992, Black Aria defied expectations by showcasing Glenn Danzig’s composition skills outside of the rock format. The album is a dark, cinematic work of modern classical and ambient music that famously reached #1 on the US Billboard Classical Albums chart.

- Side A: A conceptual suite depicting the rebellion of the angels and the fall of Lucifer (“Overture Of The Rebel Angels,” “Battle For Heaven”).
- Side B: Shifts themes to explore Celtic mythology (“The Morrigu,” “Cwn Anwnn”).
Instrumentation relies heavily on synthesizers, strings, and female operatic vocals, creating a brooding, gothic soundscape.

Crystal Blue Collector’s Edition

This 2023 reissue is a stunning presentation of the work:

- Vinyl Color: Pressed on Crystal Blue Wax, giving it an ethereal, icy appearance.
- Packaging: Housed in a Gatefold Sleeve that features the artist’s name and title embossed on the back cover. The front cover showcases the iconic artwork by legendary comic book artist Michael Wm. Kaluta.
- Hype Sticker: This copy retains the original sticker on the shrink wrap confirming the “Limited Edition Crystal Blue Vinyl” status.

It remains a fascinating piece of the Danzig puzzle, proving his artistic depth goes far beyond horror punk and heavy metal.
