Let’s focus on a classic album from one of the representative bands of the 80s Japanese heavy metal scene, Rajas. This is their first full-length album, “Turn It Up,” released on SMS Records with the catalog number SM28-5416. This particular copy includes the original obi strip.
Issued on June 21, 1985, this 9-track, 12-inch vinyl LP is considered a masterpiece of the era. Produced by Masafumi “Marcy” Nishida (the celebrated vocalist of Earthshaker), the album showcases Rajas’ signature sound: a hard-driving, melodic heavy metal assault fronted by the powerful and distinctive vocals of Kuniko “Sen” Morikawa and backed by a potent twin-guitar lineup.
The album features a strong set of tracks, including “Rock Show,” “Liar,” “Love Fire,” and “Gypsy Blood,” blending powerful riffs, melodic solos, and Morikawa’s commanding vocal presence. The production by Marcy, who also co-wrote several tracks, ensured a high-quality, powerful sound that stood out in the burgeoning J-Metal scene. The release came complete with an obi strip and a lyric/info insert.
“Turn It Up” (SM28-5416) stands as the essential debut album from Rajas, capturing their dynamic performances and classic sound. It remains a highly-regarded release for fans and collectors of 80s Japanese heavy metal.
