The Glam Rock Survivor: Michael Monroe’s Solo Debut (28HB-2042)
Today’s entry features the pivotal first solo album from the legendary frontman of Hanoi Rocks. We are examining the 1987 Japanese pressing of Nights Are So Long, released on H.I.T. Avenue Records (distributed by Fun House) with the catalog number 28HB-2042.
A Tribute to Razzle
Released on September 5, 1987, this album marks Michael Monroe’s return to the spotlight following the tragic death of his drummer Razzle and the subsequent breakup of Hanoi Rocks. The album is explicitly dedicated to Razzle, and the tone blends high-energy glam rock with a melancholic, street-punk edge. It features a mix of gritty originals and carefully chosen covers that reflect Monroe’s influences, including the Heavy Metal Kids’ “She’s No Angel,” MC5’s “Highschool,” and a poignant rendition of Johnny Thunders’ “You Can’t Put Your Arms Around A Memory.” Notable guest musicians include Ian Hunter of Mott the Hoople, who provides piano work, adding to the album’s classic rock pedigree.
Deluxe Japanese Gatefold
Manufactured by Fun House Inc., this Japanese edition is presented in a beautiful Gatefold Sleeve, a premium packaging choice that sets it apart from many standard releases. The audio was originally mastered by the legendary Greg Calbi at Sterling Sound, ensuring a punchy and dynamic listening experience.
Complete Packaging
This copy comes complete with the original Obi strip and a lyric insert (featuring liner notes by Makiko Uchida), making it an essential collector’s piece for fans of the Finnish glam legend’s resilient solo career.
