The Roots of the Air Raid Siren: Samson’s ‘Head Tactics’ White Label (ECS-81757)
Today’s entry offers a fascinating look at the early career of Iron Maiden’s frontman, Bruce Dickinson (credited here as “Bruce Bruce”). We are examining the 1986 Japanese White Label Promo pressing of the compilation album Head Tactics by Samson, released on Capitol Records with the catalog number ECS-81757.
Pre-Maiden Power Remixed
Released in Japan on May 22, 1986, this album was issued to capitalize on Dickinson’s massive global success with Iron Maiden. However, it is more than just a standard “best of” collection. Guitarist Paul Samson revisited the master tapes from the band’s classic albums Head On and Shock Tactics, remixing the tracks to give them a punchier, cleaner production that fit better with the mid-80s metal sound. The result is a dynamic showcase of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM), featuring tracks like “Vice Versa,” “Earth Mother,” and “Go To Hell,” all highlighted by the young Dickinson’s soaring, operatic vocals.
The Holy Grail White Label
This specific copy is a highly collectible Promo Sample. It distinguishes itself from the standard commercial release in two key ways:
- White Labels: The vinyl disc features the stark, text-only White Labels with the Japanese characters for “Sample (Not For Sale).” These were the very first copies pressed for radio stations and industry critics, making them highly prized for their scarcity and potential for superior audio fidelity.
- Sample Sticker: A numbered “Sample” sticker is affixed to the back cover to verify its non-retail status.
Complete Japanese Packaging
Manufactured by Toshiba EMI, the pressing quality is excellent. The release is complete with the original Obi strip and a deluxe 4-page insert featuring lyrics and liner notes. For collectors of Iron Maiden history, this is an essential document of the “Air Raid Siren” in his formative years.
